Petrina Shortt,
Realm of Possibilities
Shortt’s paintings explore an underwater world where observation and imagination mingle. Through her collaboration with Bantry Marine Research Station and her exploration of the wild kelp forests of West Cork, Shortt draws on scientific research and encounters with the marine environment. Inspired by mythical lands of wildness and abundance, the paintings evoke a luminous world just out of reach, offering glimpses of the richness and possibility held within these marine environments. By focussing on the local as an entry point for addressing larger universal themes, Petrina probes biodiversity, belonging, deep time and future long time. Her work was introduced by scientific collaborator Dr Julie Maguire of Bantry Marine Research Station. An audio recording of the introduction with photographs by Dave Ryan Media can be viewed
